the last gig

Anxiety…

I have a new book coming out this week, ‘Sick Like That.’  It is a sequel to ‘The Last Gig’ and features many of the same characters, primarily Alessandra Martillo, a Puerto Rican street kid from the Brooklyn projects.  In the first book she was doing grunt work for a sleazy ex-cop turned private investigator.  In the new story she is forced out on her own, she has to step up and be the big dog.  I had a great time writing the book.  I enjoy spending time in Alessandra’s company, possibly because she shares many of my favorite character flaws, and if I can excuse them in myself, why not in her?

In any event, I ought to be excited.

WRITER’S BLOCK

I am writing this blog, right at the moment, because I have lost traction on my story, on the book I am supposed to be working on. It is a sequel to The Last Gig, which came out in hardcover last month. January was a great month, I think I made pretty decent progress, I was fine right up until this last weekend. It’s the continuing story of Alessandra Martillo, a twenty-something Puerto Rican refugee from the Brooklyn projects. In the last book, she was working as an investigator for an ex-cop named Marty Stiles. As this book opens, Marty is in a rehab, recovering from bullet wounds suffered near the end of The Last Gig. He’s stuck in a wheelchair, and I’m guessing that’s where he’s going to stay. As a result, his body is healing as best it can, but Marty hasn’t yet decided if this new life in a wheelchair is going to be enough for him. That leaves Alessandra and Marty’s other employee, Sarah Waters, to fend for themselves. › Continue reading
